I decided today to do a little letterboxing in the southern area of Rhode Island. I had a lot of things planned but I found out that there is turkey hunting going on until the end of May. When hiking you need to wear blaze orange for safety. I could have picked up a vest and gone hiking on some trails that I planned but unfortunately I am a big chicken and I would rather not take any chances with the hunters. So I made some changes.

I still headed for the southern part of the state but I kept to drive-bys and a series on the beach (well near the beach) in
Charlestown. My first stop was a a cemetery on Buckeye Brook Rd. in
Burlingame State Park. It was a quick find and I loved the cemetery - it is very small and has a rock wall all around it - just a nice, quaint and peaceful place. After I got the letterbox back in its hiding spot I drove a little further up the road to a trailhead. There were two boxes down this trail and it was only a mile hike but there were notices posted about the hunting so I decided to just move on. I drove to the picnic area in the park to look for two boxes. Not sure if they are still there but I never found them. I couldn't even find the first landmark to start the search. But I accidentally stumbled on another letterbox. So even though I didn't find the boxes I stopped to look for I didn't leave empty handed.
Next I headed to the beach. Wanda suggested the She Sells Seashells . . . series. I drove to the area and parked, got my stuff and headed down the sandy trail. I had a great walk! It was hard walking on the sand fo

r two miles one way but I enjoyed the workout and the solitude. I didn't see anyone the whole time I was walking and finding the boxes. It was a beautiful day - sunny with a light breeze. The trail was parallel to the beach with trees and dunes that separated the two. Every now and then I would take a little trail over the dunes to the beach just to have a look. There were suppose to be ten boxes, I only found nine, I am pretty sure box two is missing. I found some rocks and a little impression in the sand next to the tree but no box. Anyway, I was out there for about three hours. I really enjoyed the walk.
By the time I finished that walk I was a little tired. I decided I needed a rest so I headed back north. On the way I made one last stop at a rest area on I95 to look for two boxes. I only found one, I am not even sure I was looking in the right area for the one I missed. I think I was just feeling tired. I decided I wanted to head back to the hotel, take a shower and rest. I want to be full of energy for the event tomorrow. So here I am taking care of business for the event. I am making this an early evening.
