One Last Day

Today is our last day of the trip - tomorrow we fly home to Santa Fe. Our flight is out of Manchester, NH so we spent the day driving from Montpelier to Manchester. We left Montpelier around 7:00am and headed south on I89. We stopped in Royalton to have a little breakfast and some coffee and then continued on. As we crossed the border from Vermont to New Hampshire we stopped at a rest area to find Mom's Rest Area by Rubaduc. It was a great carving and once I was done stamping and the box was back in its hiding spot we continued on our way. We weren't stopping for any boxes from here. We were just going to letterbox in Manchester when we got there.

We took a detour to Concord to visit the Capitol. It was a nice visit and the people there were very friendly and answered any and all questions we had. We toured the inside and then walked around the outside and I took tons of pictures. We also walked around the area near the Capitol. It was a nice little town but I preferred Montpelier. Now we headed into Manchester and started some letterboxing. Our first stop was a bike path that contained a series of five boxes - Monopoly Madness. I guess we ended up walking about a mile and a half roundtrip and found all the boxes. It was a nice series and we enjoyed the walk. From here we headed to St. Joseph's Cemetery to find Sweet Memories. The cemetery was okay but after the ones we saw in Montpelier and Barre yesterday it was a bit of a disappointment. I also had problems following the clues. I never did find the first two landmarks but eventually found the box. After stamping in we were off to Amoskeag Fishways.

They have a fish on a sign and a path of fish that leads you to the building. They also have a ladder that the fish 'climb' to bypass the hydroelectric dam. Unfortunately, it wasn't the season so we didn't get to see 'a fish climb a ladder'. But we did find two letterboxes. I stamped in at a picnic table and then rehid the boxes. Moving on we were heading to another cemetery (it was a little of a mystery) but we got distracted. We passed by a landmark that I remembered from a mystery box I had solved so we took a quick turn and found the box. I am glad we did the box is about a famous historical event. After this box was back in place we continued to the cemetery. I quickly found the box and stamped in and while i was stamping in I realized that this cemetery must have only been used a short time and then abandoned. I thought it was kind of sad - there were only about 10 gravestones and it looked like a few had been either broken or removed. There were no flowers and the upkeep was negligible. The only really interesting thing was a very large pine tree that looked kind of like an octopus. From here we headed to Derryfield Park and hiked a short distance up a hill to Weston Observatory. It was a neat place but the gate around it was locked and so was the door so we couldn't climb up into it. We did find the letterbox though. I stamped in, rehid the box and then we headed back to the car. By this time we were hungry and wanted something to eat. We both kind of wanted pizza. So we looked for a pizza place on the GARMIN (I was giving it another chance after the fiasco a few days ago) and it came up with a few choices and they were listed by the closest to the farthest away from where we were. The first one was Souvlaki Pizza and Subs - it didn't sound like it would be a place I would want pizza from. So we opted for the second one - Luigi's Pizza Bar & Grille. We had a small pizza and an order of lasagna with sausage - it was all very good.

After eating we decided to check into our hotel and get our luggage repacked for the trip home tomorrow. We got things organized and showered and then it was off to bed. I guess the past week caught up with us. Anyway it was a great trip and we got to see a lot of new things. When I get home I will post a slide show of all the pictures.
