A Beautiful and Peaceful Day

I didn't set an alarm last night when I went to bed but I was still up by 6:00am. I ended up reading for a half hour before I got up and got ready for the day. I loaded up the car and then had a little breakfast before hitting the road. My objective today was to get to Waco.

I made a quick stop at the Abilene Municipal Cemetery to find Flitter Flutter. The box was an easy drive by find and I loved being in the cemetery in the early morning - a peaceful way to start the day. And as you will see that is pretty much how the entire day went. After rehiding the box I headed out of Abilene and made my way to Waco through the backroads of Texas.
I headed out on Hwy 36 and had a pleasant drive going through Cross Plains and Rising Star before detouring to FM 587 and then FM 1027 and finally turning on to CR37 before ending at Elm Cemetery in Okra - out in the fricking nowhere. And I loved it. The whole area was so quiet and peaceful. I saw a few cars along the way but out near the cemetery I was all alone. I easily found Wag Time's Okra, Texas letterbox. I sat and stamped in and listened to the birds singing. It was a great morning.

I backtracked to FM 587 and drove to DeLeon at which point I got on Hwy 6 and made my way to Dublin. (Who needs to go to Europe when I can go to Dublin, Athens and even Paris right here in Texas.) I stopped at Dublin City Park and found I'm a Pepper (after the soda Dr. Pepper) and after a quick stamp in I was back on the road heading out of Dublin to CR 522. Here I was in another isolated and peaceful place. Although I was a little on edge since I was looking for Ghost Hunting McDow Hole, but there was nothing to worry about - just peace and quiet. The story of the McDow Hole is pretty interesting. After finding both the boxes in Dublin I was back on Hwy 6 and I ended up at Meridian State Park. I checked in at the office and made my way to the Shinnery Ridge Trail. I was looking for a Gryzzled Gryphon box. I had a little trouble with the clues but I tried my best to work them out. When I couldn't find the box on the first try I started again and tried to look at the clues differently. This trail happens to be a loop so I started from both ends just to see if I could find landmarks in the clues at either place. I ended up walking the trail twice - one looking for the box and then again just to enjoy the trail. It was nice and peaceful out there - not another soul in sight - I really enjoyed this trail, unfortunately I never found the box - either I missed it or I didn't interpret the clues correctly or the box is missing. I will have to check with Mr. Gryphon this weekend. So I left Meridian feeling a little deflated for not having found the box but I also felt really relaxed and happy because I really enjoyed my hike.

Next stop - Woodway and Waco. Still on Hwy 6 and as I neared Woodway I decided to exit and go to the Lake Waco Wetlands to find a new box by the Travelin' T's - Bird in the Wetlands. I thought I might have a shot at being the first finder and then reality set in and I just knew Gryzzled Gryphon had already been there. I could feel his presence just driving down the road. I arrived at the Wetlands and there wasn't anyone else there. Just one worker. I had the place all to myself. I set out walking looking for the right spot listed in the clues and luckily I went the right way and found the box easily. And yes, GG had already stamped in - so I ended up being the second finder. The wetlands were nice, not too many birds - just a few ducks. By this time I was starting to feel a little tired but decided on one more box before heading to the hotel. I drove to Woodway Park to find A Few of My Favorite Things. The clues were all photos and I found the box easily. As I stamped in I really enjoyed each stamp (there are 6 in this box) and the reason I enjoyed them was because they were carved by a 6 year old. It somehow made the box a little special. Once the box was back in place I headed for the hotel. I made one quick stop to pick up something for dinner. I have everything done and I am ready for a day of letterboxing in Waco tomorrow.
