Today I spent the whole day in Prescott letterboxing. I started the day relaxing in my room and catching up on emails other things while having a continental breakfast and coffee. Finally around 9:00am I decided to actually go out and do something. I left the hotel and made my way to Thumb Butte Picnic Site. My first stop was a little over a half mile from the parking area. I was looking for boxes by zebedee, a series called A Whole Lot of Happiness. There were four boxes in the series with one marked unknown and a couple of comments that one other was missing. But since I was in the area and on the trail I looked for all four. I only found two - the first and last. The hike was pretty short but for the last box you had to up a hill and so I got a little morning workout. When I was done with that series I backtracked to the actual parking area for Thumb Butte and took a short walk to find Travelling Gnome 515's Up a Creek at Thumb Butte. This was a quick and easy find and even though the parking lot had quite a few cars there was no one on the trail where I was. I replaced the box and walked back to the car and headed out for my next destination. From here I returned into town and made my way to Sundog Ranch Road and the trailhead for the Prescott Peavine National Recreation Trail. This is part of the Rails-to-Trails system and here is another link to the Peavinve Trail. I parked and paid my fee and then set out to find Azroadie's Granite Dells and Granite Dells II. The walk is on a flat and well maintained trail and I walked a little over a mile one way to find the boxes. I had no problems finding the boxes and there were plenty of places to sit and stamp in. The area is beautiful - walking among the Granite Dells was incredible, all the formations are so unique. After finding the boxes I walked around and took quite a few pictures and just enjoyed the views of Watson Lake and the area. Here is a You Tube video I found of the Dells that I thought captured the area. Next I decided to drive back out to Lynx Lake Recreation Area since yesterday it snowed while I was there and I had some trouble finding a box. I first stopped at the North Shore Picnic Area to find Flyin Free's Lynx Lake Letterbox. I walked a nice paved trail a little over a quarter mile and found the box without a problem and after stamping in and replacing the box I returned to the car and headed over to the South Shore Boat Ramp area to look again for desertgypsy's The One That Got Away: A Mother's Day Fish Story that I had trouble finding yesterday. To be honest I was thoroughly confused yesterday when I arrived at the Lynx Lake area. There were different entrances for different areas and I was having trouble deciding where I needed to be for the boxes. By the time I left the area yesterday afternoon I was a little more oriented. Anyway. when I looked for this box I had trouble understanding where the trail started and I didn't even look remotely in the right place so it is no wonder why I didn't find the box. But today was a different story - since I knew the area a little I was able to find the beginning of the trail and make my way to the box. This time I didn't have any problems finding the box but I had some problems retrieving it since there were four guys that seemed to be panning for gold right near the hiding spot. Luckily they moved a little further away not long after I arrives. I stamped in and enjoyed the peacefulness of the area and then replaced the box and returned to my car. As I drove back up Walker Road I decided to go to the area where the Salida Connection Trail #9263 trailhead begins. I was here yesterday as well and found Take a Hike but I decided to leave when it started snowing harder. Today I found a two box series called Hot Shots by SnakeDoctor. These were both easy finds - one at the edge of the parking area and the other just a couple hundred feet down the trail. After stamping in to these two boxes I decided to return to town and try for some boxes on the Constellation Trails. I parked at the Phippen Museum and the trails begin just on the other side of the road accessed by a tunnel under the road. The trial begins with a memorial to a plane crash - Plane crash in Prescott a half-century ago still a mystery - and the branches off in three directions. I don't know if I was just tired or what but I couldn't make heads or tails of the clues. I followed the first part of each of the three clues I had for boxes on these trails but then things went wonky. Nothing I did made sense and it definitely didn't match any of the clue information. After about 40 minutes on the trails I decided to call it a day. I did enjoy hiking through the Dells - it was beautiful.
Before heading back to the hotel I decided to grab a bite to eat so I drove to a place I read about on the net called Brown Bag Burger. This place is located in a strip mall and I had a great burger. You know the ones - thick and juicy and delicious. And the fries that came with it were so crispy - I loved every bite. After eating I came straight back to the hotel to shower and relax. I had another great day in Prescott and I need to get things organized because tomorrow I drive to Sedona to do some letterboxing before heading to Cottonwood for the night.
