Westward Bound
Today we left Houston headed west to San Angelo to visit Astro D’s Mom. We took I10 which was surprisingly traffic-free and drove until we reached Schulenburg. Once in Schulenburg we headed for Wolters Park to find a box by Tejas Angel called American Eagle Day.
The box was a pretty easy find and a nice carving of an eagle. After stamping in and rehiding the box we drove to downtown Schulenburg to the Von Minden Hotel and Cozy Theatre. It is a small older hotel with a movie theatre in it. Kinda cool. We located the box and brought it back to the car to stamp in. The stamp was an image of the front of the hotel – a pretty good likeness. Next we went to the Chamber of Commerce and found a microbox related to the
Painted Churches of Fayette County . An easy drive-by and once we had rehidden the box we went inside the Chamber of Commmerce and bought a map so we could visit the churches. First stop was in High Hill at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The outside is just like a normal church but the inside is painted with murals and pictures. They are mostly on the ceiling and very well done. After taking pictures and looking around at St. Mary’s we went to our second church in Praha – also called St. Mary’s. I feel that this church had better paintings. So after taking pictures we got in the car and headed for Luling. We stopped in Luling for a quick lunch and to fill the car with gas. We also found the Watermelon Thump letterbox before hitting the highway again. We didn’t get far before we stopped again – this time at a rest area – to find two more boxes - I10 Box Stop: Lulling in Luling and The Muppets Take Texas Series: Rizzo the Rat. These were both quick and easy drive-bys so we were back on the road in no time. From here we only made one stop for a bathroom break, water and gas for the car. We arrived in San Angelo shortly before 6:00pm, visited with Astro D’s Mom for a bit and then went out to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. It was a relaxing evening but I am tired and thus brings us to an end for this post.
