We were up early on Tuesday, March 10 so we could make our way to San Angelo to visit Astro D's mom. The day looked gloomy, a little overcast and a little sprinkling of rain. But after a great breakfast of shrimp omelets and fruit salad (conjured up by Tom) and getting the car loaded we said our goodbyes and we were on our way.

We stopped in
Round Rock and found five of seven boxes. We got to see the round rock that inspired the name of the town, we learned a little history of the
Chisholm Trail, saw the stadium where the
Round Rock Express plays their home games and visited the cemetery where
Sam Bass is buried. It was a good morning and we managed to escape any rain. We stopped to get some snacks and water and then left Round Rock headed west.
We made our way along TX29 and stopped at
Bertram to find the Bertram Depot. During the drive here it rained off and on and fortunately it stopped when we arrived in Bertram. It wasn't raining but the ground was wet and the letterbox was under a little building near the depot and you had to get on your hands and knees to reach the box (and that didn't work because the box was too far back - we used a hiking pole to get it out).

Once we stamped in we rehid the box, took a few pictures and headed to
Burnet. In Burnet we found one box at a nice little park that was on a creek. We stamped in and rehid the box. While in Burnet we got to visit the World's Smallest City Park (at least that's what the sign said) in front of the Visitor's Center. We left Burnet and frove to
Llano to find Birding Lettebox: Vermillion Flycatcher and Get Out Free. by this time the rain had stopped but it was still a little overcast. We found both boxes and sat at a picnic table and stamped in. With Vermillion Flycatcher Astro D reached her second milestone on this trip - her 700th find.

WooHoo!!! Get Out Free was hidden at an old jail and I really liked the building and was sad to see it starting to fall apart. So after we finished stamping in and took a few pictures we had to make a decision on which way to go to San Angelo. We could have gone on TX71 to Fredonia, Brady and Eden or continue on TX29 to Mason and Menard. We chose TX29. I really needed to find a box in
Menard since that is my last name. So we made our way to
Presidio San Saba to find a Boots Tex box. Of course we weren't disappointed, another great carving. I was a little sad to see how deteriorated the ruins were - I hope they do some restoration or this beautiful site might not last much longer. From here we decided to visit
Fort McKavett. There were three boxes here - one outside the site and two inside. We found Washer Pitching Microbox and then entered the site, paid the entry fee and looked at a couple of buildings before taking the short hike to the letterboxes.

There were signs along the trail and each one talked about an animal that can be seen in the area. We read one about
armadillos and not more than twenty steps down the trail we were both startled by one that was right on the side of the trail. It has been a long time since I've seen an armadillo in person and man are they ugly. After we gained our composure we continued to the boxes. We found Fort McKavett and Camp San Saba Microbox. It was starting to get late and we still had a little drive to San Angelo. We studied the map and drove to
Eldorado and then up to San Angelo. We got there right about dinner time, visited with Astro D's mom, ate and then relaxed. It was a good day, a little rain early on and then clearing up to blue skies. I found 14 boxes and some very nice stamps. I also got to visit some very interesting sites and see some new places.
