A Day at the Lake

Today I decided I wanted to go to Lake Somerville State Park and look for some of the boxes that are already there and that way I could concentrate on the new boxes planted for the event this weekend. I wasn't in a rush so I slept in and then got ready and had some breakfast before leaving for the park. I didn't get there until around 9:30am. Not far from the entrance to the park I stopped to look for a box. This was NativTxn's Animal Tracks - Frog box. Unfortunately I didn't find the box so I continued on to the park and made my way to the park office. I paid my fee and then headed out to look for boxes. First I went to the Equestrian Area. The first box I went to look for confused me. I parked where the clue said to park and then I tried to find a trail headed north but was unsuccessful. I gave up on that one and took the Somerville Trailway at the end of the loop. I am not sure what was wrong with me but I had lots of trouble keeping focused and the clues were confusing me. I had clues for four boxes along this trail and I only found one. I didn't really look for the others because I couldn't really follow the clues. I finally gave up and returned to the car and drove to the Old Hickory Camping Area. At this spot I had clues for three boxes. I took the trail and ended up confused again. I was looking for a trail junction with a sign that I never found. I ended up using the first junction I came to and I found one of two boxes. I tried for the other box but the trail was overgrown and I was having trouble finding landmarks so I gave up and headed back to the car. On the way back to the car I stopped to look for a box that had a note that the stamp was missing. I found the box and there was no stamp - so I put it back and returned to the car.

Next I drove to the Yaupon Camping Area and took a short walk and found Baby Bear's Hidden Turkey. This was a quick and easy find and I didn't get confused. After returning this box I made my way back to the car. I then drove to the Pavilion Area. I had clues for four boxes. I found two boxes and had trouble with landmarks with the other two boxes. I have to say that this park is really overgrown and I have the scratches to prove it from fighting my way through thorny vines. I finally left this area and drove to the Post Oak Camping Area. There were clues for three boxes. I only found one. Again the trails were overgrown and I was having trouble finding landmarks so I decided to call it a day. I returned to the car and used some wet wipes to clean up the blood on my arms from the thorns. I also noticed that I was tired. The day was beautiful and the weather was clear with temperatures in the 70's but with the humidity I was soaked. Humidity always wears me down and I decided to head back to the hotel and take a shower and rest. I ended up reading for a bit and now I am logging in finds and getting this blog post completed. I am thinking I might wear long sleeves for the event if I am going to have to face these vines again.
